Artist Statement:
I find my bearings in the physical world. The three paintings all have to do with the moment of change. Landscape captures the ephemeral in the everyday. At the same time, a painting freezes that moment. What came before and what comes next are always in our consciousness. The image stops time.
Have a Little Shadow was a moment of transition for me, for the season, for the day. A rainstorm had just passed, chased away by sunshine. My cast shadow changes depending on the movement of my body. It was also a moment where I transitioned from years of still life painting to painting landscapes.
Fall View, Sheffield, is about the splendor of a beautiful fall day. The brilliant colors belie the loss of light in winter. It’s a moment made more delicious knowing that the chill of winter is right around the bend.
Last Ice Guilder Pond is a first taste of spring, beautiful but also prescient. Change, seasons, give context to our experiences. What’s next is always present.
